GRB jet structure and the jet break

چکیده

We investigate the shape of jet break in within-beam gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows for various lateral structure profiles. consider cases with and without spreading a range inclinations within core half-opening angle, $\theta_c$. fit model observed afterglow lightcurves smoothly-broken power-law function free-parameter $\kappa$ that describes sharpness break. find is sharper ($\kappa$ greater) when included than absence spreading. For profiles sharp-edged core, parameter has broad $0.1\lesssim\kappa\lesssim4.6$, whereas smooth-edged have narrower $0.1\lesssim\kappa\lesssim2.2$ models both are included. jets, depends strongly on inclination system $\theta_c$, more dependent size Using sample 20 GRBs we nine candidate structures eight structures, while remaining three consistent either. The break, as measured by $\kappa$, can be used an initial check presence where well-sampled at around jet-break time.

The polarisation of afterglow emission reveals GRB jet structure

We numerically compute light and polarization curves of γ-ray burst afterglows for various configurations of the jet structure and for different dynamical evolutions. We consider a standard homogeneous jet and a structured jet with power-law wings. We show that the lightcurves from these two configurations are very similar to each other, and therefore only very high quality data could allow us ...

Uncorking and Jet Eruption in GRB

We show that the collapsar model of gamma-ray bursts results in a series of successive shocks and rarefaction waves propagating in the " cork " of stellar material being pushed ahead of the jet, as it emerges from the massive stellar progenitor. Our results are derived from analytical calculations assuming a hot, ultrarelativistic 1-D flow with an initial Lorentz factor Γ j ∼ 100. The shocks re...

The role of afterglow break–times as GRB jet angle indicators

The early X–ray light curve of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is complex, and shows a typical steep–flat–steep behaviour. The time Ta at which the flat (plateau) part ends may bear some important physical information, especially if it plays the same role of the so called jet break time tjet. To this aim, stimulated by the recent analysis of Willingale et al., we have assembled a sample of GRBs of know...

Optical and X-Ray Observations of GRB 060526: A Complex Afterglow with An Achromatic Jet Break

We obtained 98 R-band and 18 B, r, i images of the optical afterglow of GRB 060526 (z = 3.21) with the MDM 1.3m, 2.4m, and the PROMPT telescopes in Cerro Tololo over the 5 nights following the burst trigger. Combining these data with other optical observations reported in GCN and the Swift-XRT observations, we compare the optical and X-ray afterglow light curves of GRB 060526. Both the optical ...

Jet Break Time – Flux Density Relationship and Constraints on Physical Parameters of Grb Afterglows

We derive a relation between the flux density Fν,j at the light curve break of a GRB afterglow and the break time tj. The break is due to the transition from the spherical-like to jet-like evolution of the afterglow when the Lorentz factor of the jet equals the inverse of the initial half opening angle, i.e. γ = 1/θ0. We show that this relation indeed behaves as Fν,j ∝ t −p j among GRBs for the...
